![We often think that once the baby is born, the hard part is over. But there’s a vital final chapter: birthing the placenta, also known as the third stage of labor.
This stage is more than just a formality. The placenta, which nourished your baby throughout pregnancy, needs to detach and be delivered to allow your uterus to contract properly and minimize bleeding.
There are two main approaches:
• Physiological (Expectant) Management: Most midwives practice this way. Allows the placenta to deliver naturally, supported by your body’s cues and gravity. This method can take up to an hour and benefits from skin-to-skin contact and breastfeeding, which stimulate natural contractions.
•Active Management: The majority of women are going to experience medical, or active management of third stage. Involves administering medication to prompt uterine contractions, followed by controlled cord traction to deliver the placenta, usually within 30 minutes. This approach can reduce the risk of heavy bleeding, especially in higher-risk situations.
Understanding and preparing for this stage is essential. Discuss your preferences with your care provider and include them in your birth plan.
